(Chapter 7) THE RESCUE
Mr. Watermen heard a knock on his door. He opened the door to see
Mrs. Jones standing in front of him with tears in her eyes and unable to
speak.
"Please come in," he said to her as he took her to his living room and
sat her down on the couch.
"It's been two days. Two days and still no word from Eddie and Patsy,"
she cried. "Some of the other parents have hired outside help to look for
their children."
"The sheriff has no clues?" he asked her.
"No," she replied. "I know this sounds crazy, but something keeps
drawing me to you, I can't get you out of my mind. Is the story you told me
true?"
"Yes, Mrs. Jones," he said and sat beside her. "I know it's hard to
believe, but you must, to save your children. We must act now."
"So what do we do?" she asked hoping that Mr. Watermen was the
answer to finding her children.
"Wait here, I'll be right back," he said and rushed off to another room.
He returned shortly with a harmonica in his hand. "Take me back to your
house."
Without questioning him she drove him to her house. When they
arrived Sheriff Atkins was waiting. Mrs. Jones stopped the car and ran to the
sheriff.
"Did you find them?" she asked.
"No, not yet, but we are still looking," he replied. "Why is Mr.
Watermen in your car?" he asked suspiciously.
Mrs. Jones looked at Mr. Watermen, then back at the sheriff to tell him
what they were doing, but the sheriff had turned his back to her and bent
over to tie his shoe and in doing so his pants slid halfway down his rear end.
In disgust Mrs. Jones turned away, and now exasperated by the sight in
front of her, she decided not to tell him.
"I was just giving Mr. Watermen a ride home when I saw you," she
said looking in the opposite direction 'til the sheriff stood back up.
"Oh, well, maybe you can keep him here for a while, I want to check
out his house," he whispered to Mrs. Jones.
Mrs. Jones just nodded in agreement, even though she knew that
Sheriff Atkins couldn't search Mr. Watermen's house without a search
warrant. But she agreed just to get rid of him. Sheriff Atkins took off in his
car while Mrs. Jones and Mr. Watermen entered her house.
"Quick, to Eddie's room," said Mr. Watermen. They entered Eddie's
room and sat on the floor next to the toybox.
"Now what?" she asked.
"If I'm right, and I find the right note it will open the gateway to Zaff,"
he said as he blew the dust off his harmonica and then held it up to his
mouth. Keeping his eyes on the toybox, he began to blow into the
harmonica, slowly blowing out each note. He tried for ten minutes but
nothing happened. He then put his mouth on one end of the harmonica and
quickly blew down to the other end.
"This is ridiculous, nothing is..." she started to say as Mr. Watermen
started blowing on the harmonica going in the other direction.
Startled, Mrs. Jones jumped up. "Oh my god! What is that?" she said
staring at the green light bursting up from the toybox.
"Get off, Griffin you're leaning on my hair," Sue shouted and pushed
Griffin.
"Why do you always get the corner?" Griffin snapped back.
"Toomie! That was my piece of food," Joey yelled trying to get Toomie
to drop the piece of food from his mouth.
"Leave him alone Joey!" Patsy shouted and rushed over to rescue
Toomie.
"If I don't eat enough, I'll pass out!" Joey shouted back at Patsy as he
scrounged for more food.
"Go ahead and pass out, see if I care," said Patsy angrily.
"Oh yeah, how would you like it if I ripped the stuffing right out of Mr.
Tuddles?" Joey blurted at her.
"You just try and I'll knock your head off," Patsy shouted back.
Kennedy sat quietly by herself and watched the rest bicker at each
other, she too was getting tired of being locked up, but all the arguing wasn't
helping.
"Shut up!" Kennedy yelled and stood up. "All of you, just shut up!"
They stopped what they were doing and stared at Kennedy, surprised
by her sudden outburst. Kennedy walked over to the wooden bars at the
window and stared out. She then looked at the bars, then looked over at
Toomie and back at the bars.
"I think Toomie can fit through the bars," Kennedy said trying to
measure the distance between the bars with her eyes. "Come here Toomie,
come on." Toomie ran over to Kennedy expecting a pat on the head, when
suddenly he was picked up off the ground and was being shoved between
the bars. He struggled, but it was no use, Griffin was now helping with the
pushing.
"Look, he fits!" shouted Griffin. Toomie dropped through the bars to
the ground outside. He started to sniff the ground then jumped up at the
window trying to get back in.
"No Toomie, go find Eddie," said Griffin waving his hand towards the
path. But Toomie didn't understand so he sat down and started to whine.
"Patsy tell him to find Eddie."
"Toomie, find Eddie, find Eddie," Patsy said. Toomie seemed to
understand and ran off toward the path.
"It's never going to work, Toomie doesn't know where Eddie is," Sue
said gloomily.
"It's going to work, I know it is," said Kennedy as she waved goodbye
to Toomie.
Patsy sat back down, now really worried. Eddie is gone and now so is
Toomie, she thought to herself.
"I don't believe that this is happening!" said Mrs. Jones staring at the
green light.
"It worked," said Mr. Watermen excitedly as he looked down into the
toybox. "I will go see if I can find them, you stay here."
"You can't go down there alone, let me call the sheriff," she said as she
tried to hold him back.
"He will never believe you, besides there's no time," he said and
climbed into the box.
"Do you really think my children are down there?" she asked.
"Yes I do, don't worry I'll find them," he said and disappeared down
into the light.
Mr. Watermen stepped carefully on each step for fear of falling. When
he reached the bottom, the green fog lifted and revealed the strange world.
Zaff is just like I remembered, he thought to himself as he started to walked
through the field. I wonder if the Talinks are still living in the forest, he
asked himself. After a long walk he reached the edge of the forest. As he
looked around he thought to himself that there should be Talinks here to
greet him, but no one was here, not a sound. He started to move into the
forest when he thought he heard a noise. He took a couple more steps and
heard it again. It was barking. He turned to look out into the field, and as he
scanned the field he saw a dog running straight for him.
Seeing the man standing there, Toomie ran faster. He reached Mr.
Watermen and jumped up at him. Mr. Watermen pushed Toomie down, then
bent over to look at the name on Toomie's collar.
"Toomie," said Mr. Watermen as he patted Toomie on the head. "You
must be Eddie's dog." Mr. Watermen stood up and looked around for Eddie
and the others. He then bent down and patted Toomie again. "So where are
they, hey? Go find Eddie," he said.
Toomie took off in the direction that he came from, running back and
forth to Mr. Watermen who could not keep up. Toomie took him up Leato
Mountain, through the passageway in the mountain.
"Ohhh, so this is where the Talinks live now," he said as he stood
looking out over their village.
Toomie ran down the path and Mr. Watermen quickly followed. When
they reached the lodge, Toomie began to bark. Talinks ran out of the lodge
to see another stranger standing before them. Kennedy was the first to hear
Toomie barking and she ran to the window.
"Toomie brought someone back!" she shouted. "It's... oh no, it's Old
Man Watemen." The others ran to the window to look out.
"Hello, don't be afraid I'm friendly," Mr. Watermen said holding his
hands out.
Tone took a closer look at the stranger, he looked into Mr. Watermen's
eyes and jolted back with surprise.
"He has been here before!" he shouted. "Who are you?"
"My name is Ron!" Mr. Watermen said proudly.
Excitement grew through the crowd and all he could hear was the
chanting of the word 'Ron'.
"Ron! Are you really Ron? You have changed, but we welcome your
return," Tone said.
Ron followed them inside the lodge and sat in front of the fire, along
with Toomie who was exhausted from his journey. The Talinks sat quietly,
staring and waiting for something exciting to happen.
"We have waited a long time for your return, to destroy Dragnot,"
Tone said.
"I am sorry, but father took the gateway away. I thought it was
destroyed, I had no way back to your world." Ron said apologizing. "But a
couple of days ago, I believe, some children found the gateway and are now
here."
Tone pointed at Poss, "Bring the strangers." Poss ran off and returned
with Sue, Joey, Griffin, Patsy and Kennedy.
The gang entered the room and came to a dead stop when they saw
Mr. Watermen.
"What's he doing here?" asked Griffin.
"He's come to scoop out our eyes and put them in a jar, for
trespassing in his orchard," said Kennedy.
Patsy ran past the others toward Mr. Watermen. "Please Mr.
Watermen, please take us home," Then sat next to him holding his
hand. "They took Eddie, the Sooms took Eddie."
"It's ok, I'm here to help you get home," he said looking around the
room.
"Do you have the noise maker?" asked Tone. "Give it to me," he said
holding out his hand.
There is no way I can risk giving this harmonica to Tone, it's our only
way home, he thought to himself.
"No," Ron said.
"No! How dare you defy me!" Tone shouted angrily. "If you don't give
me the noise maker, you will stay here forever."
"If you don't let us go, I will use the magical powers from the noise
maker on you!" Ron blurted back at Tone knowing very well the harmonica
had no magical powers to hurt the Talinks. But they didn't know that, he
hoped.
Tone and the others gasped with fright and chatted amongst
themselves.
"We need to find the boy who was taken by the Sooms." said Ron.
"But Dragnot will kill you all," said Tone.
"I will take care of Dragnot and Rimm, if I can," said Ron.
"Poss, you will take them to Talen forest, to Dragnot," said Tone.
Poss looked at him as though he were crazy, but kept his mouth shut
because he knew not to defy Tone.
"Come on children we are leaving," Mr. Watermen said as he followed
Poss outside.
Kennedy continued to stare at Mr. Watermen as they headed up the
path.
"He sure doesn't look like that crazed old man from the orchard," she
whispered to Joey.
Eddie felt something tugging on his arms, and woke to see Rimm
untying his hands. He then pulled Eddie to his feet. Eddie stumbled a bit as
Rimm pulled him toward Dragnot, and pushed him to the ground.
"All of Zaff will be mine one day," Dragnot said as he floated above
Eddie crossing his arms. "Without the noise makers, no one can stop me,
and one by one I will make the Talinks evil or I will kill all of their lives. How
many lives do I have to take from you before you die?"
Eddie was now frightened by that statement.
"What do you mean how many lives do I have?" asked Eddie.
"I sometimes have to kill Talinks up to twenty times before they die,"
said Dragnot. "It's time for you to meet Kraph."
The Sooms began to laugh, then grabbed Eddie and dragged him off
toward a small black pond.
"Kraph usually doesn't eat meat, but we find if you just cover the meat
with something tasty, he never notices," said Rimm as he glared at Eddie.
"Dress him in fur."
They took some of their fur blankets and started to wrap them around
Eddie's body. Then they grabbed him by the ankles so his body was lying on
the ground, and began to run through the black pond. The black mud in the
pond only came up to the Sooms' knees, but, Eddie, with his head down in
the mud, began to choke as he tried to hold his breath. Every time they
stopped to turn around, Eddie came up for air. They pulled him out of the
black mud and stood him up. Eddie choked and spit mud from his mouth
and before he could get control of his breathing they dragged him off to the
opening of a large cave. The cave was dark, damp and cold, and the only
sound that could be heard was the sound of their foot steps echoing in the
distance. Some of the Sooms reached into their pouches and pulled out
glowing stones, which gave them enough light to see the inside the cave.
They tied Eddie's hands to a metal ring hanging on the wall of the cave, then
put some of the glowing stones on the ground around Eddie.
"You know, I've been thinking, if you can travel back and forth through
the gate, then so can I," Dragnot said as he circled above Eddie's head a
couple of times. "It would be very interesting to see who is on the other
side."
Eddie started to struggle with rope tied around his hands. Mom is on
the other side, she doesn't even know where I am, or what's happening. I
wish dad was here, he thought to himself. Anger started to build inside him
as he struggled more with the ropes. "You stay away from my mom, or
I'll..."
"You'll what?" said Dragnot as he grabbed Eddie's chin in his hand and
pulled him close to his face.
Eddie jerked his face away and stared at the ground.
"I'll kill you," he muttered to himself.
"Well it's time for Kraph to eat, we must go," Dragnot laughed as they
started to head out of the cave.
Eddie tried to untie the rope with his teeth, then he pulled on the
metal ring and finally, giving up in frustration, he screamed, "Help me!"
Eddie suddenly realized that his body shook uncontrollably then stopped.
Boommm! Boommm!
Eddie's knees buckled together as his body shook from the vibration.
He stared off into the darkness, terrified by what might be coming.
Boommm! Boommm!
"Where's Eddie? I don't see him," whispered Patsy as she peeked
through the bushes.
Mr. Watermen pushed a couple of branches aside to get a better look
at the Sooms' camp. The Sooms seemed to be celebrating, by chanting and
dancing around Dragnot's rock.
Dragnot finally appeared, "Once Kraph has destroyed the stranger,
Rimm will take you to Leato Mountain to get the Talinks."
"Kraph! Kraph is going to kill Eddie!" Patsy screamed and Griffin
quickly covered her mouth with his hand, hoping no one heard her.
"Mr. Watermen what are we going to do?" asked Sue hiding behind a
tree.
"Poss you must take us to Kraph," Mr. Watermen said looking at Poss
who was holding a branch up over his face.
"It's not far," said Poss. "But dangerous."
They backed away from the Sooms' camp and headed for the cave.
Mr. Watermen was leading the way with Poss walking next to him.
"Poss, this Kraph, how big is it?" Mr. Watermen whispered to Poss so
as not to scare the children more than they already were.
"Very big, see cave there, he just fits," Poss whispered back.
Mr. Watermen looked at the size of the cave entrance and felt a shiver
run down his back.
"What does this thing eat?" asked Mr. Watermen.
"Usually just flowers, but Dragnot will sometimes cover Talinks in
some black mud which Kraph likes," said Poss as he looked around
cautiously. "Wait here." And before Mr. Watermen could stop him, Poss ran
off into the forest. Mr. Watermen was now standing alone with the frightened
children and with no idea what he should do.
"Are we going in there?" asked Kennedy pointing toward the cave. "I'm
not going in there, there is no way I'm going in there..."
Just as Mr. Watermen was trying to get Kennedy to calm down, Poss
returned with a large flower.
"This for Kraph, eat flower, may not eat us," he said as he started
toward the cave.
"What does he mean eat us?" asked Joey.
"Shut up Joey you're scaring Patsy," said Sue.
"Scaring Patsy! I'm so scared, I don't think I'll eat ever again," said
Joey.
"Patsy hang onto Toomie, don't let him go," said Griffin as his glasses
started to fog up.
"Ok children, please be quiet," said Mr. Watermen as they walked into
the cave.
Eddie's heart was beating so loud he was sure he could hear it echo
through the cave. He stared so hard into the dark, his eyes started to water.
Boommm! Boommm!
Boommm! Boommm!
Eddie blinked a couple of times to make sure his eyes weren't playing
tricks on him. Two yellow glowing eyes materialized from the darkness. He
could hear something breathing hard, then it emerged. Eddie fell to his
knees with fright.
Boommm! Boommm!
Eddie looked up at the monster. It was like a large lizard, its eyes were
yellow with a red circle in the middle, it was walking on all four legs, had
round shaped scales, the body was light green at the head and toward the
tail it became dark green. The head, snout-shaped like a snake, had pointy
horns curving upward from the chin and two horns from the nose pointing
down, the scales around the neck stuck straight out to the side. It started to
walk closer to Eddie making the ground shake as it walked with claws cutting
into the ground. It stopped when it saw Eddie, it looked around then sniffed
the air. As its mouth opened green slime drooled down the sides. A tongue,
the length of a car, with bumps all over it, stretched out to wipe up the
drool.
Eddie frantically tried to free himself from the ropes causing his wrist
to bleed. He looked down to see blood all over his hands. A sudden
flashback told him that his nightmare was coming true. Or was it a dream?
Startled by a sudden shrill from Kraph, Eddie curled up into a ball on the
ground to make himself as small as possible.
"What, what was that?" asked Griffin as they came to a sudden stop.
"Look there's a light up ahead," said Sue.
Hearing the shrilling sound echoing through the cave made Mr.
Watermen sick to his stomach. He hoped it wasn't too late to find
Eddie alive.
As they walked out into the open light, they gasped with fright at the
sight of Kraph. Kennedy screamed, which caught Kraph's attention. With a
quick turn of his head he was staring at Mr. Watermen and the kids. Kraph
then let out a roar which made everyone cover their ears. He sniffed the air
and turned his attention back to Eddie.
"He's going to eat Eddie, do something Mr. Watermen!" shouted Patsy.
"Poss you distract Kraph with the flower and I will help Eddie," said Mr.
Watermen pushing Poss out in front.
"Meee, go in there?" Poss asked as he was pushed even more.
Poss carefully tippy-toed to the other side of the cave. Mr. Watermen
waved at Poss to get Kraph's attention. Kraph was now standing over Eddie,
he bent his head down to sniff the boy, then started to drool. He stuck his
tongue out and licked Eddie across his back. Patsy could barely hang onto
Toomie who was know barking and lunging toward the monster.
"Ahhhh! Help me!" Eddie screamed at the top of his lungs.
"Hey, hey look what I got!" shouted Poss as he waved the flower up
over his head. Kraph turned his head to where Poss was jumping up and
down. He sniffed the air and licked the drool from his mouth. Kraph
couldn't resist the sweet smell of the flower and started to walk over to Poss.
As Kraph was no longer interested in Eddie, Mr. Watermen ran over and
pulled out his pocket knife to cut the ropes on Eddie's hands. Feeling
something grab his arms, Eddie was startled to see Mr. Watermen.
"What...Mr. Watermen, what are you doing here?" asked Eddie with a
shaky voice.
"Never mind that now, we have to get out of here," Mr. Watermen said
picking Eddie off the ground.
Kraph was about to snatch the flower from Poss, when he noticed his
other meal was trying to get away. He turned away from Poss and headed
for Eddie and Mr. Watermen and before they could run Kraph was standing
over top of them. He knocked Mr. Watermen to the ground with his head and
then stuck out his tongue and wrapped it around Eddie's right leg and
started to pull him up so he was hanging upside down. As Eddie was being
pulled up he saw Mr. Watermen's knife on the ground and grabbed it. Eddie
was about to cut Kraph's tongue when Kraph wrapped his tongue around
Eddie's whole body trapping his arms to his sides, Eddie struggled, but was
unable to move. The others screamed in horror. By now Toomie was
struggling to get free, barking and jerking forward so hard, Patsy could no
longer hang on. Toomie broke free from her grip and ran toward Kraph. As
Eddie was hanging upside down, he noticed the two harmonicas hanging
around Kraph's neck. Kraph opened his mouth and started to pull Eddie in,
when out of the corner of his eye he noticed the barking little animal
jumping and down at him. Not too worried about this annoying little thing
he continued to put Eddie into his mouth. Just then Toomie jumped high
enough to reach Kraph's tongue and bit into it. Kraph screamed in pain and
swung his head around. Toomie was still hanging on, but Kraph suddenly let
go of Eddie who grabbed onto the nearest thing as he was falling. Eddie was
hanging from the rope which held the harmonicas, he was still holding the
knife in his other hand. He cut the rope and fell to the ground with the
harmonicas. Kraph was still shaking his head wildly with Toomie still
attached to his tongue. Finally he broke free and Toomie went flying across
the cave and landed on his side, he slowly got up and started to bark again.
Kraph snapped at Eddie, but missed as Eddie rolled off to the side.
"Eddie! Blow the harmonica!" shouted Mr. Watermen. Eddie too
frightened to do anything started to run."Eddie! Do it now!"
Eddie put one of the harmonicas up to his mouth and started to blow,
but it wasn't loud enough, he was out of breath. Kraph was again on top of
Eddie and about to bite down on him. Eddie looked up and blew into the
harmonica making a loud screeching noise. Kraph stopped. Bending his
head from side to side he roared in pain and ran off into the darkness. Poss
could not believe his eyes as no one had ever come out of Kraph's cave
alive.
The gang stood quivering with their mouths wide open. Patsy ran over
to Eddie and hugged him.
"Oh, Eddie I thought you were dead!" said Patsy with tears running
down her cheeks.
Eddie looked at Patsy who was like a stranger to him, she was being
so nice.
"Let's get out of here before it comes back," he said trying to stand up
on his shaky legs.
Mr. Watermen stood up and dusted himself off, Kennedy ran to him
and hugged him.
"It's ok Kennedy," he said. "Eddie my boy, are you ok?"
"Yes," he said looking off into the darkness of the cave.
They ran out of the cave and hid in some nearby bushes to catch their
breath.
"Can we go home now?" asked Joey.
"Yes, but there is still one thing we have to do," said Mr. Watermen.
"The Talinks are still in great danger from Dragnot and Rimm; they must be
stopped."
"But what can we do?" asked Griffin.
"These harmonicas will stop them, it will lock Dragnot up inside the
rock forever and I hope it will change Rimm back to a Talink again. Here's
the plan," said Mr. Watermen as they huddled together and discussed their
strategy.
"Rimm, you will attack the Talinks tonight, take all the Sooms with
you!" shouted Dragnot as he floated above the fire.
Patsy peeked through the bushes then sent Toomie out into the camp
to stir up trouble.
Toomie ran out barking and growling at anything that moved. The
Sooms jumped back as they had never seen such an animal.
"What is this?" shouted Dragnot.
"It's that stranger's, it was sitting next to him with the Talinks," said
Rimm pulling his arms up so this thing wouldn't bite him.
"Well get rid of it," said Dragnot.
Rimm ran to get a stone to throw at Toomie, but when he returned
there were three strangers standing around the carved rock, all holding a
noise maker. Rimm dropped the stone and screamed, "No!"
Dragnot turned to see Eddie, Griffin and Mr. Watermen holding the
harmonicas up to their mouths.
"How, how did you get the noise makers? This is not possible," said
Dragnot as he started to panic.
Rimm started to run toward them, but was intercepted by Toomie
biting his ankle.
"Now boys, blow now," said Mr. Watermen. They began to blow into
the harmonicas, the sound got louder and louder. The Sooms, fell to their
knees holding their ears and crying in pain. Dragnot started to screamed and
wave his arms around uncontrollably. He flew over top of Eddie and
threatened to kill him if he didn't stop. Dragnot pointed his horned tail up at
Eddie and started to fly straight at him. Eddie looked up to see Dragnot
about to stab him when something stopped Dragnot and started pulling him
up toward the crack in the carved rock. Dragnot screamed in anger then in a
cloud of smoke he disappeared into the rock and the crack sealed shut.
Rimm and the Sooms fell to the ground and lay there motionless.
"Is he gone?" asked Sue as she stepped out from the bushes.
"Yes, Dragnot is gone," said Mr. Watermen.
"Are...are the Sooms dead?" asked Patsy getting ready to poke one of
them to see if they would move.
"No, I think they are sleeping or something, but let's get out of here
before they wake up," said Mr. Watermen.
Eddie grabbed Toomie by the collar and they ran into the forest. When
they reached the edge of the forest, they could see the stairs in the green
fog, across the field.
"I have never been so happy to see anything," said Griffin.
"Well, I guess it's time to say goodbye to Poss," said Mr. Watermen
looking down at Poss.
"Yes, I must tell Talinks the good news," Poss said as he walked over
to Eddie grabbing his hand and holding it up to his own. "Good friend of
Talinks." Poss then smiled at the others, bent over and hugged Toomie who
in turn licked his face, then quickly turned away and ran off toward Leato
Mountain.
They looked back at the stairs and began walking across the field,
when Toomie broke loose from Eddie's grip and ran back to the trees.
"Toomie! No! Come back!" Eddie shouted. Then he noticed Toomie
wasn't alone; someone was petting him, it was a person, a human. Eddie
stared and blinked a couple of times and then gasped with shock.
"Dadddd...?" Eddie muttered as he took a couple of steps toward
Toomie. "Dad is that you?" he shouted.
"Eddie, what's wrong?" said Mr. Watermen.
Eddie looked back at Mr. Watermen and said, "It's my dad, he's alive,
look over there..." Eddie looked back over to where Toomie was, but no one
was there and Toomie was now running back toward Eddie. "My dad was
right there, I saw him, he was petting Toomie," Eddie said desperately. "Dad
where are you?"
The gang looked at the direction Eddie was pointing, but they saw
nothing. Mr. Watermen walked over to Eddie and put his hand on Eddie's
shoulder.
"Eddie, your dad died three years ago," he said trying to console the
boy.
"But it was him," said Eddie with his eyes searching in all directions.
"You have been through a tough couple of days and you're
tired sometimes your mind plays tricks on you. Come on let's go home,
your mother is waiting for you," Mr. Watermen said as they turned and
walked toward the stairs.
"I'm never coming back here again, the food is terrible," said Joey as
he was the first to walk up the stairs and disappear into the green fog.
"Wait 'til I tell my mom and dad about this place," Kennedy said
excitedly as she followed Joey.
"They'll never believe us," said Griffin. "Maybe I should find something
to take back with us as proof."
"If you don't keep moving, I'll knock your head off, keep moving," Sue
said impatiently as she pushed Griffin up the stairs.
"Eddie you're in so much trouble when you get home, it's all your fault,
you made me come here..." Patsy mumbled on as she walked up the stairs.
"She's back to normal," said Eddie rolling his eyes up into his head.
"Are you ready to go Eddie?" said Mr. Watermen.
Eddie looked back toward the forest hoping to see his dad again or
whoever it was.
"You must accept that your father is gone, but he would have been
very proud of you today."
"Yeah, I guess," said Eddie, so sure that it was his dad he saw petting
Toomie. He took one last look at Zaff and followed Mr. Watermen up the
stairs. "Come on Toomie."
Toomie walked up behind Eddie, then stopped to look at something. He
wagged his tail with excitement and barked once, then turned to run back
down the stairs, but Eddie called him again. He looked out at something in
the field and barked, then looked back up at Eddie, and ran up the stairs into
the green light.
